South coast highlights, Ice cave and Glacier hike
SEE THE ITINERARY HERE BELOW
Starting with a pick up at your hotel at 9:00 we head out for the South coast in a super jeep/truck. This tour gives you a chance to enjoy all the best highlights the South coast has to offer in one awesome package. On day 1 we check out the impressive Skógafoss waterfall which carries water from two powerful glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull which dominate the slope of the active Mt. Hekla. On sunny days we are likely to see a rainbow or two as they‘re very common there.
Our next stop of the day is the beautiful Reynisfjara black sand beach. They‘re main attraction are the basalt trolls, Reynisdrangar, they‘re hexagonal basalt columns constantly beaten by the roaring ocean waves.
The waves on the beach can be very dangerous and we urge you to stay well away from the shoreline due to the strong sneaker waves which have been known to drag people out to sea.we are likely to see a rainbow or two as they‘re very common there.
Afterwards we recommend lunch at one of the many cozy restaurants in the area, the Black beach restaurant is one of our favorite. After lunch we head out for some jeep action on the black sands before heading to our hotel for the night. If you‘re lucky the northern lights might even make an appearance while you relax at the hotel as there is little light pollution in the country side.
On day two we drive towards Breiðamerkurjökull glacier where we find our ice cave. You will be fitted with safety gear and headlights before entering the ice cave that will hopefully show us it’s bluest colors. Once we‘re done exploring the ice cave we head straight onto the glacier for a short glacier hike before making our way to Jökulsárlón, glacier lagoon.
Jökulsárlón is a part of the Vatnajökull national park and appeared around 1933 due to the melting of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Here you will see icebergs floating in the lagoon and might even see a seal from time to time. On the other side of Highway 1 we‘ll walk down to the Diamond beach where icebergs sit on the black sand beach of Breiðamerkursandur, having washed upon shore, glowing like crystals. This day is truly a unique experience and possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Then it’s on to our final stop of the day, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you have an option of walking behind the cascade. There you will have to mind your step as the trail is wet and slippery due to constant mist coming from the waterfall. During the winter months, the waterfall is lit up and provides great photo opportunities.
You can expect to arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon.
