Seljalandsfoss – Skógafoss

Eyjafjallajökull – Landmannalaugar
Mt. Hekla – Hot Springs – Waterfalls
Volcanic Craters – Black Beaches
Gleaming Glaciers – Gullfoss
Geysir – Langjökull

This day shows you the setting for the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010. During the eruption millions of liters of melted ice from Eyjafjallajokull came bursting down the mountainside causing massive destructive floods on its way to the Atlantic and changed the scenery for years to come.

The first stop of the day is at one of Iceland’s most popular waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss. Here the sure-footed can walk behind the thundering cascade but be careful as the trails is narrow and a bit slippery. Extra caution is especially needed during the winter and good footwear is recommended. Then it’s on to a spectacular hidden canyon rich with unique flora, green moss and a beautiful waterfall called Gljúfrabúi.

Now it’s time for more action as we head to Gigjökull glacier tongue. The driver will deflate the tires for some serious jeep action, including splashing through glacier rivers, so fasten your seatbelts and keep your windows closed and experience the fun!

In the afternoon the tour takes you for a fun action drive to the black volcano beaches of the south, where you have panoramic views in all directions.

Our last stop of the day is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, the impressive Skógafoss. It brings water from the 2 glaciers surrounding it, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

This one-day tour takes us to the delightful Landmannalaugar valley. Landmannalaugar, which translates as ‘the people’s pools’ lies at the center of the Icelandic highlands.

We enter the highlands through the Þjórsádalur Valley which takes its name from Þjórsá river. It offers an extraordinary landscape of sandy lava fields, rivers, birch woods, bizarre rock formations and waterfalls. Our first stop is at Hjálparfoss (Help waterfall), and it’s with the last bit of green that you’ll see before entering the extraordinary mountain scape of the highlands.

Next, we arrive at the ‘pearls of the highlands’, the water-filled Ljótipollur, an explosion crater lake. It name translates as Ugly puddle but it’s anything but. The red crater walls create a stunning sight that you’ll be all too excited about photographing.

From there we head to the highlight of the tour, the wonderful area of Landmannalaugar, a place within the Fjallabak nature reserve. The landscape here is quite surreal and a favorite for hikers. Here you have an opportunity to bathe in the natural hot springs of the Landmannalaugar oasis or take a short stroll around the area. Be sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel if you’re interested in a geothermal bath.

From the warm pools of Landmannalaugar we make our way to the queen of active Icelandic volcanoes, Mount Hekla.

This classic tour begins with a visit to thundering rainbow-ringed Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, which carries the melt-water from Langjökull glacier.

From there we drive up to the mighty Langjökull glacier where you have the option of adding a one-hour snowmobile ride (Must be booked in advance).

We drive down from the glacier to the thermal landscape of the iconic Geysir with the erupting hot springs. Geysir is quiet these days but neighboring Strokkur will not disappoint and is guaranteed to send a spout of boiling water high into the air every few minutes.

Onward to Þingvellir National Park, the site of the World’s oldest parliament which first met in the summer of 930 AD. Þingvellir National park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The entrance to Þingvellir is a walk through the Almannagjá gorge, where there are visible evidence of plate tectonic activity on the European-American fault-line which still today is pushing the two continents apart and creating Iceland, geology’s youngest country.
