This one-day Golden Circle tour is the very best way to combine the most popular sites in Iceland with an exciting activity – snowmobiling.
The first stop on this Golden Circle tour is at Þingvellir national park. The birthplace of Icelandic democracy and where the World’s first parliament met in the summer of 930 AD.
Þingvellir National park has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004. The entrance to Þingvellir is a walk through the Almannagjá gorge. You’ll see visible evidence of plate tectonic activity on the European-American fault line. Which is still today pushing the two continents apart and creating Iceland, geology’s youngest country.
Then it’s on to Geysir, which has given its name to spouting hot springs. The giant geyser Strokkur will not fail to impress you so have your camera ready for when it blows, which it does every few minutes. Other geothermal features include fumaroles, mud pools, and other smaller geysers as well as the large but dormant Geysir.
Before heading into the southern highlands, we visit another of our iconic and impressive natural features, Gullfoss. It goes by the name the Golden waterfall and carries the meltwater from Langjökull glacier down the Hvítá river. The waterfall has distinct curves and thus adding drama to the powerful display. You can grab something to eat at either Gullfoss or Geysir café before we drive on the mountain road Kjölur. Up to the snowmobile site on Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland.
This route offers fascinating glimpses of nature´s majesty. Once on-site, you will be kitted out with an insulated all-in-one jump-suit, giant mittens, and safety helmet, then given clear and precise instructions for handling these powerful machines. Led by the experienced mountain guide, the snowmobiles shoot off in single file for an hour of often high-speed driving along the carefully chosen route over the glacier. The return journey down from the glacier provides further unmissable photo opportunities on this action-packed day.
Þingvellir is a site of historical, geological and cultural importance. It is the site of a rift valley caused by continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates. This unique geology offers interesting sites such as fissures with crystal clear waters that are popular with divers. Öxarárfoss is the main attraction in Almannagjá gorge.Þingvellir is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Þingvellir was the centre of icelandic culture. The Alþingi (assembly) was Iceland’s supreme legislative and judicial authority and the oldest parliament in the world.
Geysir is one of the most famous hot springs in the world. It lies dormant at the moment but its neighbour Strokkur goes off every 4-8 minutes, sometimes elevating up to 40 metres high.
Gullfoss is a waterfall that is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland. It is about 32 m high and drops into a crevice about 20 m wide and 2,5 km in length. Gullfoss carries a lot of sediments that glacial ice has carved off the earth and colours the water slightly brownish.
Langjökull is Iceland’s second largest glacier. Despite its size not many river directly originate from there. The glacier is shrinking quite fast and covers 2 volcanic systems. Volcanically the region is relatively quiet. Here it is possible to add a snowmobile ride to the tour.
Please note that a valid drivers license is required to operate a snowmobile.
Standard price includes a snowmobile ride sharing a two-person snowmobile. If you are solo traveller / rider you must upgrade before the tour to a solo snowmobile.
Dress according to the weather. Please wear/bring warm, comfortable clothing and waterproof outer layer, sturdy hiking boots, gloves and wool/fleece hat. Note jeans and sneakers are not recommended, good sturdy shoes are vital. Lunch and snacks can be bought during tour but are not included.
